In the 1950s, private Christian schools began springing up across the U.S., but "Christian education" wasn’t the goal. These schools were created for one reason—to keep white children from attending school with Black children after Brown v. Board of Education mandated public school integration. Known as white flight or segregation academies, several adopted Confederate names and mascots. Several still exist today—many remaining predominantly white.​
